Step 1: Locate defective power supply
Symptoms of a bad power supply could be several things, but the most obvious will be a section of 2-4 LED modules not showing any content while the surrounding LED modules work as expected. Less common symptoms could be the color of the content is incorrect, content pausing intermittently, etc.
You can also confirm that the power supply is functioning or not by attaching a voltage meter to the top and bottom connectors. You should be getting at least 120 volts. If you are getting less than that, or nothing at all, that is the power supply to replace:
Step 2: Remove LED modules to expose power supply
Once you’ve located the area with the defective power supply remove the affected LED modules until the power supply is exposed. For instructions on how to remove an LED module see the article How to Remove an LED module.
Step 3: Turn LED Ticker power off
For instructions on how to disconnect power see the article How do I power cycle my Ticker?
DO NOT PROCEED until you have verified there is NO power going the power supply. This can be done with a voltage meter on the L and N terminals.
Step 4: Disconnect power cords from power supply terminal
Using a phillips screwdriver, loosen the screw on each terminal then gently pull the cables out of the terminal. If the cables do not come out easily you may need to loosen the connector a little bit more.
Start with the low voltage terminals labeled -V and +V.
Step 5: Remove power supply from Ticker cabinet
The power supply is secured to the Ticker cabinet with two nuts located on the top of the power supply. Remove the nuts, then pull the power supply out.
Step 6: Install new power supply on mounting plate
When you remove the defective power supply it will come out on a mounting plate. Remove the mounting plate from the defective power supply by removing the four screws on the back. Once removed, install the new power supply on the mounting plate.
Step 7: Install new power supply
Install the new power supply in the Ticker cabinet. Use the same nuts removed from Step 5 to secure it in place.
Step 8: Reconnect 5V power cords to terminals
Start with the 5 volt cords. These are the red and black cords that feed power to LED modules and Ticker controller. Tighten the screw to each terminal you’ve attached power cords to and make sure the cables are securely in place. Gently tug to verify. The cable should not pull away from its terminal.
When you are finished, your power supply connections should look like what is shown in the picture below.
Step 9: Reconnect 120VAC power cords
Connect the black 120 line to the terminal (L)
Connect the white 120 line to the terminal (N)
Connect the green/white 120 line to the ground terminal (⏚)
Tighten the screw to each terminal you’ve attached power cords to and make sure the cables are securely in place. Gently tug to verify. The cable should not pull away from its terminal. When you are finished, your power supply connections should look like what is shown below.
Step 10: Double check work
Before restoring power, double check that cables are connected to the proper terminals and each cable is securely in place.
Step 11: Restore power
Look at the Power Supply and verify the LED light located under the +V ADJ label is on.
Step 12: Reinstall LED modules
Reinstall the LED modules that were removed.
Step 13: Verify content is shown properly
With the defective power supply replaced, the previous issues should be resolved. Observe the content scrolling on the Ticker for a few minutes and confirm. If you continue to see problems, call your contact at Rise Vision to discuss nexts steps.
