Due to a recent Google Chrome change videos that are not muted do not autoplay.
Currently, when the volume is set to 0 in the Video Widget settings, it is not setting the video element to muted, and this is preventing videos from autoplaying in the latest Chrome version.:
This issue only affects:
- Preview if you’re on the latest version of Google Chrome
- Chrome OS devices that are unmanaged and have upgraded to the latest version of Google Chrome
This issue does not affect:
- Rise Player on Windows
- Rise Player on Raspberry Pi
- Rise Player on Linux
We are working on changing the Video Widget so that when it is used in Preview it will always be set to muted and therefore will always autoplay.
And we are changing it so that when the volume in the Widget settings is set to 0 the video element is muted and will autoplay which will provide a workaround for Chrome OS devices that are unmanaged.
The target date for completing these changes is May 16th.
As part of our work on the new Chrome OS player and our players for Windows, Raspberry Pi and Linux we’re going to be adding the flag for disabling the autoplay policy which will prevent this issue entirely when we upgrade the Chrome versions.
