Hoping this will be of use to other people who may have faced this. I am running RiseVision on Raspberry Pi and Dell 7070 MFF PCs running Ubuntu with Full-HD displays in portrait mode.
The Raspberry Pi's have a simple setting which just works, however with the Ubuntu machines if a display is turned off and then back on, it defaults to landscape which is not ideal. I have delved into the world of XRANDR and after much reading of blogs etc I have finally found a reliable solution which disables 'hot plug detection,' in other words the graphics card will just constantly pump out what you have set it to (1920 x 1080 60Hz rotation left in my case). To do this. open Terminal and enter:
settings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xrandr active false
sudo udevadm control --stop
