Overview
Follow the instructions in this document to update the Java on an LED Ticker NUC to a version that supports TLS 1.2.
Before You Start
You will need the following equipment in order to complete the update:
- USB keyboard and mouse
- USB flash drive
- USB hub with 3 USB ports
- Portable monitor
- HDMI Cable
- HDMI to Mini-HDMI adapter
- 15’ ladder
- USB flash drive
- Philips screw driver
Review the following articles to get familiar with the steps to service an LED Ticker and access the NUC device:
Instructions
- Download this script and save to a USB flash drive
- Remove the first and second LED modules from the right side as you are facing the LED Ticker (instructions). (Do not let them hang freely by their cables,, as this can damage the cables and ports)

Locate the LInux PC and connect the following devices to it (use your USB hub if needed):
- USB Keyboard and mouse
- USB flash drive with the script saved to it (from Step 1)
- Portable monitor (via HDMI)

Transfer the script from USB flash drive to Linux PC
- Click the Linux icon in the lower left corner → Accessories → File Manager
- From File Manager, select the USB Flash Drive on the left
- Copy (or drag) the file to the Downloads folder
- Open Terminal: Click the Linux logo in the lower left corner → Accessories → LX Terminal
- Enter the following command in Terminal to make the script executable
sudo chmod +x ~/Downloads/updateJava.sh
- Enter the following command to run the script
sudo ./Downloads/updateJava.sh
- When asked if you would like to install Java 21, type yes and press enter.
- Verify the value of Default Java shown is: openjdk version "21.0.11" 2026-04-21 LTS
