Low bandwidth or high latency can cause your digital signage to buffer or fail to update. This guide shows you how to use the Web Page template to test your network performance directly on your media player hardware.
Pro Tip: If your computer is on the same network as your media player, you can perform these tests in your computer's web browser for a quick estimate. However, testing directly on the media player is the best way to rule out hardware-specific issues.
Test Your Connection Speed
A speed test helps you determine if your network has enough bandwidth to download high-quality videos and images.
- Log in to your Rise Vision account and select Presentations.
- Click Add Presentation and search for the Web Page template.
- In the Web Page URL field, enter
https://fast.com/. - Click Publish to send the test to the display you want to check. The test will run automatically and show your download speed in Mbps.
Test Your Network Latency
Latency (or "ping") measures how long it takes for data to travel from your player to the server. High latency can cause "stuttering" in web-based content.
- Log in to your Rise Vision account and select Presentations.
- Click Add Presentation and search for the Web Page template.
- In the Web Page URL field, enter
https://testmy.net/latency?testALL=1. - Click Publish to send the test to the display you want to check. The test will run automatically. Review the results once the progress bar finishes.
Behavior Notes
- Ideal Latency: For digital signage, a latency under 100ms is ideal. If you see results consistently over 200ms, you may experience playback issues.
- Test at the Player: For the most accurate results, run these tests from the media player itself to account for specific cables or Wi-Fi interference affecting that device.
- Wired vs. Wireless: If your speeds are low, try connecting the player via an Ethernet cable to see if the performance improves.
- Minimum Requirements: We recommend a consistent download speed of at least 10 Mbps for smooth 1080p video playback.
